The Energy Department is evaluating how much it would cost to prop up the nation's declining nuclear and coal-burning power plants, says Energy Secretary Rick Perry. Despite ongoing backlash from grid operations, renewables groups and other entities that assert a bailout is unnecessary, Perry continues to argue that cost shouldn't matter because grid resiliency is a matter a national security.
The rise of renewable energy in the US continues, with renewable sources accounting for 22% of the country's power generation from January to April of 2018. Coal usage in electricity generation declined to 27% during that time frame, and natural gas accounted for 31%.

Innergex Renewable Energy has pulled the plug on a pair of wind farms in Texas, citing concerns about their proximity to Sheppard Air Force Base near Wichita Falls, says the firm. The projects would have had a combined capacity of 300 megawatts.
A consortium featuring Royal Dutch Shell, Van Oord, Eneco and other entities has arranged financing for their $1.5 billion Borssele 3 and 4 offshore wind project off the coast of the Netherlands, they say. The partners expect to break ground on the project late next year.

Utility Ameren Missouri has secured regulatory approval for the Renewable Choice Program, an initiative that allows commercial and industrial buyers to acquire 100% of their electricity from renewables. "We know customers across Missouri are looking for more choices, control and greater flexibility. This program is one of the ways Ameren Missouri is meeting those needs," notes President Michael Moehn.
