Taking Care of Business

The U.S. EPA and DOE had their hands full last week announcing the award-winners of two major federal energy programs -- the Green Power Partnership and the Energy Star Building Challenge. Meanwhile, Texas-based microprocessor maker AMD took the opportunity to angle for next year’s award: The Green Power Partner pledged to power its Austin campus with 100% renewable energy.

And speaking of Energy Star . . . Grist.org’s advice maven Umbra Fisk takes over the expert desk this week with a look at who really profits from EPA’s flagship energy program.

Finally: Intrepid columnist Brad Allenby on the cultural downside of “guns, germs, and steel.”
