Taking Care of Business


Much of what we cover every day on GreenBiz.com and its sister sites has to do with the world of big business -- the major chemical, automobile, retail, forestry, and other behemoths that are seeking to improve, whether incrementally or radically, their environmental footprint. That makes sense on two levels. First and foremost, big companies doing even smallish things can have a huge impact; witness this week's story about how Kodak and Wal-Mart are partnering to recycle used materials from in-store photo kiosks, saving two millions pounds of waste a year.

Second, big companies typically have big public relations budgets, and are more able and likely to spread the word about their good, green efforts. We receive a daily deluge of press releases, tips, and other missives from the world's largest companies -- and the world's largest PR firms -- alerting us to their, or their client's, initiatives.

But all of this is a bit of a disservice to the millions of smaller firms that are similarly reducing their impacts. For many of these firms -- local print shops, dry cleaners, travel agents, auto mechanics, butchers, bakers, and candlestick makers -- making even incremental changes can be grueling, given their financial and human resource constraints. In some ways, their heroic green efforts are even more worthy of celebration.

We aspire to cover small business better, and are making plans to do so. In the meantime, we're happy to share a couple of related stories -- one about a group of companies in our neighborhood in the San Francisco Bay Area that have managed some impressive energy savings, and Jonathan Bardelline's GreenBiz Radio interview with the Business Alliance for Local Living Economies, a national organization working to catalyze and connect local businesses to promote sustainable communities.

There's more to come. At GreenBiz, we firmly believe that when it comes to being green, small businesses are the next big thing.
