LOCAL BITE - CHICAGO
NEW FARMERS MARKET
On Your Mark(et)...
If 10,000 Chicago Biters buy only locally grown produce from late spring through early fall, we'll save enough gas to fill 3,705 Olympic-size swimming pools.
Get set…go…to Andersonville next Wednesday when its first weekly farmers market moves into starting position. Instead of traffic on Berwyn Ave., the street'll be crowded with local, sustainable, in-season-now foods - such as bell peppers, leafy greens, Japanese eggplant, and bunches o' basil from a dozen-plus area farmers; including Illinois's Triple A, Michigan's Videnovich, and Wisconsin's Scotch Hill. Plus, every week kids can bounce and sing along to tunes from peeps like the Merry Music Makers and Old Town while you dash between booths.
Why Care?
Locally grown fare often has more nutrients than supermarket produce because it's fresher - typically available within 24 hours of picking versus the average 4 to 7 days to your grocer.

Personally Speaking
We'll be picking up an adjustable black canvas bag (see photo) printed with "I'm Not a Plastic Bag" - in Swedish (natch).

Wanna Try?
Andersonville Farmers Market; Wednesdays, 4-8 pm, through Sep. 9; W. Berwyn Ave. at N. Clark St. (773-728-2995). Japanese eggplant, $1; basil, $5/bunch; canvas bag, $15.
