The Green IT Perspective
By Matthew Wheeland
We're just two weeks into the new year and the new decade, and it's already been a booming year for green IT. Witness as Exhibit A the latest stimulus funds directed at green IT projects. While still a trickle compared to the billions in bank bailouts -- and even billions in other stimulus projects -- it still marks progress in wider recognition and adoption of green IT as an environmental imperative.
Exhibit B runs parallel to Exhibit A, with industry and research groups jumping head-first into a project to make ICT 1000 times more efficient. The Green Touch initiative, spearheaded by Bell Labs and its parent, Alcatel-Lucent, aims to drive the amount of energy your gadgets, computers and data centers need way, way down.
These two exhibits are just a drop in the bucket, and in my latest blog post I argue that they're the first trickles of a flood that mean 2010 may well be the year green IT 2.0 breaks out -- when green innovations go beyond data centers and computer energy efficiency and begins to transform every aspect of our daily lives. Check out the post for more details.
