Use Caution When Eating Sea Food...

Even though Mississippi's waters have been 100% opened for fishing and swimming by our government and others, the Mississippi Sound is testing positive for oil contamination by a very simple method: shrimp-boat skippers worried about liability and concerned for the Public's safety dropped absorbent pads in the water and had Truthout's reporting staff witness it. Those same pads were then sent in for lab testing. See the story below:

I checked this article out, it's really a great article that speaks of hope for rural America, which matters to me. Below is my reply to the blogger who posted this heart-felt and brilliant article:

This is one of the best and most hopeful articles I've seen on the issues facing small-town America. This is an issue that matters to me, because I come from a smaller town, (35K) and I've lived in towns as small as 1,050 souls. I also happen to be a huge advocate of renewable energy, with a focus on the Great Lakes region. See my blog, The Great Lakes Zephyr - Wind Energy & Hydrogen Journal at http://gl-zephyr.blogspot.com for reference.

That said, one has to be careful advocating production of hydrogen in the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes system holds one-fifth of all fresh water on the planet, or 20%, and serves as the source of drinking water for millions of people in the U.S. & Canada. However, these lakes only replenish 1%, yes, that's right, one percent, of their total volume in rainfall and snow-melt annually. We are already taking more than that for drinking water - thereby slowly draining these lakes, which will be a tragedy if it comes to pass.

Far better to derive the hydrogen from waste-water coming out of sewage treatment plants in this region than to directly draw it from the lakes themselves. There may even be an efficiency benefit to this idea. It was recently discovered that water containing urea (That's right, pee) uses significantly less electricity to produce [hydrogen]. This process requires 0.37 VDC as compared to 1.23 VDC for straight water. (Source: Pee Power: New Technology Produces Hydrogen from Urine - http://www.energyboom.com/emerging/natural-emissions-new-technology-produces-hydrogen-urine )

Regards, and keep up the good work.

Extreme Weather: Face the facts

-----Original Message-----

Subject: Extreme Weather: Face the facts

Dear Daniel,

The facts are devastatingly clear.

Around the globe, we are on track to see the hottest year yet in 2010. From the flooding in Pakistan to droughts in Russia and landslides in China, the effects of this year's extreme weather are catastrophic and undeniable.

The recent pattern of extreme weather events is consistent with what scientists have projected to result from climate change: temperature shifts, severe rainfall and snow in some parts of the world, and major droughts in others.

Check out Repower America's fact sheet on extreme weather and share it with your friends.

Despite the overwhelming facts, skeptics -- like the now infamous Koch brothers1, Massey coal2 and Lord Monckton3 -- will no doubt continue to spend big bucks to keep spreading misinformation about global warming.

But if we want to fight the skeptics, we'll need a growing number of people to get informed. As the evidence mounts, leaders like Russian President Dmitry Medvedev are finally speaking out about climate change. President Medvedev spoke out at a United Nations Security Council meeting and said,

"What is happening now in our central regions is evidence of this global climate change, because we have never in our history faced such weather conditions in the past. This means that we need to change the way we work, change the methods that we used in the past."4

In Pakistan, nearly 1,600 people have died this summer from the worst monsoon-related floods in living memory. And around the world, 2000-2009 was the warmest decade on record5, and 2010 is on track to be the warmest year the world has seen in 131 years.

Extreme weather events are putting lives in danger all around the world. Make sure you get the facts and spread the word.

Learn more about the link between extreme weather and climate change today.

Thanks for getting involved,

Dave Boundy

I've Updated The Way My Feed Works For The Great Lakes Zephyr

When I post to the Great Lakes Zephyr, it pushes through to three other sites that I use as well. This change will help it make sense by the time it flows all the way through, as one of the sites is Twitter, and it is aead of another site in the chain. Twitter shortens everything down to 140 characters total.

I've now fixed it so that Twitter uses the subject line of my posts and links back to the blog post it's relaying - which make a lot more sense when it gets to the other end of the flow. Thanks for putting up with my construction dust.
