The March Toward Greater Transparency
The Carbon Disclosure Project revealed this week that an unprecedented number of companies, including more than 80 percent of the Global 500, are reporting on their greenhouse gas emissions, despite a tough economy and uncertainty around global climate legislation.
As if to underscore how much has changed in the last few years, professional services firm Ernst & Young -- far from anyone's idea of a "heavy emitter" -- announced a 15 percent reduction in its global footprint, powered in part by progress on Scope 3 emissions, specifically its business travel. PricewaterhouseCoopers also reported that it met its 2012 climate goal two years ahead of schedule.
As our feature story on supply chain transparency points out, measuring and managing Scope 3 emissions remains a challenge, but there are a growing number of tools and initiatives available to help.
The bottom line? Greater transparency is inevitable, and their are significant benefits to embracing the trend sooner, rather than later.
