A Note from the Editor

By Eric Olson -- BSR

Signs of Things to Come?

Climate adaptation and risk management are major themes in this week’s stories, including our feature column from my BSR colleague Ryan Schuchard, which outlines an approach and tools for identifying climate-related risks and opportunities.

While we may not be able to predict the future precisely, it is at the heart of our duties as leaders and risk managers to be prepared for the most likely and/or threatening possibilities. To that end, the Australian government has begun issuing guidelines recommending that planners and developers avoid certain coastal areas likely to be threatened by rising sea levels within the next several years.

What really caught my eye, however, was an interview with the head of Deutsche Asset Management in which he indicated that his group is making their clean technology investments just about everywhere EXCEPT the U.S. in light of the continuing regulatory uncertainty in this country -- a troubling confirmation that we may be ceding the clean energy race to China and other countries.

Pause on this one for a moment: the Chinese government has developed policies to support a boom in private sector investments in clean technology, while here at home Congress fails to advance any meaningful legislation, leaving us to argue over the merits of regulation via the Clean Air Act.

I am rubbing my eyes and hoping this changes ... really soon.

How Businesses Can Plan for the Unpredictability of Climate Change
By Ryan Schuchard

While climate science provides evidence of general trends, we are still a long way from predicting specific climate events.
