Taking Care of Business

By Joel Makower

We at GreenBiz.com are blessed with a strong and growing stable of contributors, who complement the daily output of our own prolific staffers. You probably know a few of the regulars: Senior writer Marc Gunther, green building guru Rob Watson, toxics expert Rich Liroff, green consumer guru Suzanne Shelton, and others. And some newer additions, including Forrester Research VP Chris Mines, on green IT; Heather King, who writes our "View from the C-Suite" column; and Paul Baier of Groom Energy, a leader in carbon and environmental management software.

Behind them are still other regulars: Tom McKeag on biomimicry; Leanne Tobias on green real estate management and development; GreenOrder's Stephen Linaweaver; and green building legal eagle Shari Shapiro.

All told, more than 300 people write for GreenBiz.com and its sister sites each year -- some regularly, some once in a while, and some just once. (Let us know if you want to be one of them.) Meanwhile, our team of staff writers and editors produce some 2,000 stories of their own each year.

This week, I'm pleased to welcome our newest contributor: Senior writer Adam Aston, formerly energy and environment editor of BusinessWeek, where he covered alternative and conventional energy, efficiency, transportation, building and design, green business and finance, as well as climate science. He'll be covering many of these topics for GreenBiz.com, as well as reporting on the goings-on in and around his New York base. He does exactly that this week, with a report on an encounter GE's CEO Jeffrey Immelt recently had with a group of bloggers. Welcome, Adam.

World Water Week: Last week was World Water Week, an annual opportunity for companies and thought leaders to unleash a steady stream of events, reports, and more. We covered a fair number of them, starting off with Associate Editor Tilde Herrera's Q&A with Dan Bena, PepsiCo's director of sustainable development, which has declared that access to clean water was a human right. There's also water-related news from SABMiller, the nonprofit Imagine H2O; Coca-Cola and The Nature Conservancy; and IBM. Meanwhile, Managing Editor Matthew Wheeland pours it on with 10 Companies Setting Big Goals for Water Efficiency.

Last Call! On two fronts: Tuesday's webcast on How to Drive Business Value from Product and REACH Compliance, hosted by the aforementioned Marc Gunther; Tuesday is also the last day to comment on ULE 880, the draft sustainability standard for manufacturing companies from UL Environment (in partnership with GreenBiz.com). ULE already has received hundreds of comments -- more than for any standard in Underwriters Laboratories 116-year history. But it is important that everyone weigh in with feedback, both positive and negative, and I encourage you to do so.
