"Panic Early and Avoid the Rush"

Be sure to check out the great new tools published on behalf of GeSI by my alma mater The Boston Consulting Group, which enable managers to evaluate the impacts and benefits of intelligent IT use on their energy and GHG footprint. This is one of many signs that the theory of sustainability solutions in the IT space is ready to enter into practice.
It has also been a busy month for major solar installations and commitments, with major launches and announcements from Kohl’s and Janssen following similar news from Walmart earlier this month.
One of the greatest single “climate actions” announced this week, however, is one whose impact is far less intuitive. I am referring to General Mill’s commitment to shift to 100 percent sustainable palm oil by 2015. Global agricultural practices represent a huge share of GHG emissions -- both direct and indirect -- and the deforestation associated with unsustainable production of palm oil in many regions has a double/triple negative impact that must be addressed. Bravo to General Mills and others that are stepping out to shift practices in the sector.
