White pelicans thrive in Green Bay area

The white pelicans are believed to have been part of the Green Bay landscape in the 1700s and 1800s. Evidence is inconclusive about precisely when they disappeared, or why. But they returned in the mid-1990s and have been growing in numbers ever since. Source: Green Bay Press Gazette (10/12)
Great Lakes coal, limestone shipments up from last year

Canoeists make quick work of Lake Michigan

Mike Schnitzka's and Dan Hoffmann's 11 hours, 22 minutes is the unofficial standard for the fastest crossing of Lake Michigan via canoe. Earlier this year, the Great Lakes Environmental Law Center named Nick Schroeck as its executive director. Established in 2008, the nonprofit legal group with ties to Wayne State University advocates for protecting the region's natural resources, particularly the "world's greatest freshwater resource." Erie County (NY) joins efforts to stop Asian carp from infesting Lake Erie

At its Sept. 23 session, the Erie County Legislature unanimously approved a resolution submitted by Legislator Lynne Dixon, District 12, which puts the Legislature on record urging federal and state officials to step up efforts to prevent Asian carp from infiltrating the Great Lakes.
