Taking Care of Business
By Joel Makower
Last week, senior sustainability executives from 30 large companies convened in Milwaukee for GreenBiz's thrice-yearly gathering of the GreenBiz Executive Network. The two-year-old network is a membership-based, peer-to-peer learning forum for execs in large companies. The fall meeting was hosted by member company MillerCoors and included a beer-infused dinner in the historic Miller Caves, a cavernous underground space created in 1849 to keep beer cool prior to distribution.
But we weren't there just to drink. The two-day meeting was typical of the Executive Network: Member presentations about strategy and initiatives, member-led discussions about how sustainability strategy works in their companies, and how it can work better, and sharing around the room of challenges and successes. Topics included a member presentation on "Integrating Sustainability & Corporate Responsibility into Core Strategy," another on "The ROI of Sustainability," and one on "Selling Sustainability." The presentations and conversations are conducted under a not-for-attribution basis, in which specific comments aren't attributable to specific individuals. Suffice to say, the depth and breadth of the conversation was gratifying to all involved.
The next meeting will be held in March on the campus of member company Microsoft, in Redmond, Wash. For more information about the network, see here.
Green Marketing 3.0: Last week's publishing by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission of proposed updates to its "Green Guides" created a bit of a stir in the green business world. The much-anticipated update aims to clarify the rules of the marketing road for the 21st century, including biobased products, carbon offsets, green energy, and other things that weren't prevalent when the guides were last updated 12 years ago. GreenBiz.com published several takes, including perspective pieces from marketing consultant Perry Goldschein and from me.
Silo vs. Enterprise: This week's free webcast focuses on the discrepancy between sustainability data collection at the facility level and the corporate level in an era of ever-growing demands for disclosure. Hear Groom Energy's (and GreenBiz contributor) Paul Baier in conversation with American Electric Power's Greg McCall, Fujifilm's Harold Williams, and Enviance's Greg Gasperecz. The hour-long webcast addresses practical approaches to deploying an environmental data strategy company-wide, while preserving the investment in local solutions and avoiding hours of laborious spreadsheet work. Tune in October 14 at 2 pm Eastern / 11 am Pacific. Click here to register.
Last Call! Registration for next week's GreenBiz Innovation Forum has shaped up nicely, exactly the kind of high-quality corporate and thought-leader audience we hoped to draw to this invitation-only event. There are a few seats remaining, so let us know ASAP if you're interested.
