Advocacy Advance is also working with partners to maximize bike/ped funding in each state through the Navigating MAP-21 program. Guide to Fundraising Part Three Available | "Finding Local Funding Sources," part three of the Alliance's evolving Guide to Fundraising series, is now available in the Alliance Resource Library. This guide builds off of "Creating and Implementing an Effective Fundraising Plan" and "Anatomy of a Winning Proposal" to help you take advantage of local sources of funding, including membership and donors, local foundations, sponsorships and events. Still Accepting Benchmarking Surveys As part of the ongoing benchmarking project, Alliance staff is in the process of collecting surveys requesting data from all 50 states and the 50 most populous cities in the U.S. These surveys are an important and necessary component of the biennial Bicycling and Walking in the United States: Benchmarking Report. If you received a survey request from the Alliance and have not yet submitted your city or state's data, please be sure to get it in soon to be included. Promote Active Transportation: Join the 2013 Climate Ride | Show your support for active transportation and the environment by joining the 2013 Climate Ride, and ride for the Alliance! Climate Ride supports sustainability, renewable energy, and bicycle advocacy with two rides each year. Join Climate Riders for the California ride from May 19-23, 2013, or ride from New York City to Washington, DC September 21-25, 2013. Mark your calendar and register today! Registration is just $75, and then you can begin to raise $2,400 for organizations committed to work on clean energy, sustainability, climate education and bicycle advocacy.
This year, Climate Ride raised over $300,000 for the environment, green energy and active transportation. Several Alliance member organizations were beneficiaries of the 2012 Climate Ride, and the ride also raised $6,000 for the Alliance for Biking & Walking. When you sign up, don't forget to designate the Alliance and any number of Alliance member organizations as your beneficiaries in 2013! Upcoming Conference Calls
| Our Mutual Aid conference calls are a great forum to gain insight from your Alliance peers on the specific issues and topics that are important to your organization. Additionally, Advocacy Advance has been hosting a series of calls to help you direct funding sources toward investments in biking and walking. All calls begin at 2 p.m. Eastern and run for one hour. This month: - January 8: APBP/Alliance Federal Policy Call:
- Our guest speaker Caron Whitaker, formerly the Campaign Director for America Bikes and now the VP of Government Relations at the League of American Bicyclists, will discuss how the fiscal cliff, changes in Congress, and other key issues affect transportation funding. The session will also provide resources for the implementation of MAP-21, the current U.S. transportation law.

This past month: - On December 5, the Alliance hosted a call on Innovative Bike/Ped Education and How to Promote It. We heard from three great panelists working on educational programs, particularly around youth and families, and discussed how to promote such programs. - On December 12, we had a great panel who shared their experience and expertise on Best Practices in Board-Staff Relationships. Welcome, Mary Lauran! | Please join us in welcoming Mary Lauran Hall, our new Communications Manager. Mary Lauran's first day with the Alliance was January 2. As the Communications Coordinator of America Bikes in 2012, Mary Lauran helped craft campaigns to incorporate bicycling into the federal transportation bill. She brings with her years of campaign experience and is looking forward to working to build national campaigns and promote the work of Alliance organizations. Welcome, Maggie! | Please join us in welcoming Maggie Melin, the Alliance's Benchmarking Research Assistant. Maggie grew up in Michigan and most recently spent the last two and half years living in Berlin, Germany and Lund, Sweden where she enjoyed commuting by bike and foot on a daily basis.
In Sweden she earned a master's degree in sustainability science from Lund University and holds a master's degree in urban and environmental planning from the University of Virginia. Through her education and experiences abroad, she has become committed to finding ways to encourage biking and walking across North America and to make it more accessible to more people.
