Today, President Obama's administration took an important step in the fight against climate change—thanks to you and nearly 30,000 WWF activists who spoke out and urged the reduction of emissions from coal-fired power plants.
Last June, in his Climate Action Plan, the president called for common-sense solutions, including the first-ever safeguards for carbon pollution from power plants. Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a proposed regulation to cut carbon pollution from power plants by 30 percent. By taking action last month, you sent the message that we can no longer give a free pass to power plants to dump unlimited amounts of carbon pollution into our air. It's clear that the administration heard you!
Currently, the EPA limits how much mercury, arsenic, soot and other air pollutants power plants can emit. But there are no limits on carbon pollution — even though power plants contribute 40% of the nation's carbon dioxide emissions, the most abundant type of pollution that causes climate change! With this EPA proposal, we are one step closer to cutting carbon pollution in the US and showing the rest of the world that we're serious about tackling the climate crisis.
Now, we need to make sure the proposed regulation stands. Fossil fuel companies and other opponents of climate action will do all they can to defeat it before it's finalized. All of our work to protect wildlife and nature will be put at risk if we don't address the climate crisis, and these new standards are the strongest actions that have been taken by the US government to do so.
The EPA will need to hear from us again to stand up against all of the money that big polluters are going to pour into defeating this plan. I'll be in touch again soon to let you know how to stay involved in this important fight!
