Opinion: Offering tax incentives for wind will yield long-term benefits
Every successful economy needs affordable and plentiful energy -- and offering the wind industry tax incentives today is one way the U.S. can prepare for the future, writes Loren Steffy. "Development of wind technology could help address the country's future energy needs and fill an important role in diversifying our energy portfolio and enhancing energy security," he writes. Upstate N.Y. sees wind farm proposals in the works
Wind energy is growing in upstate New York, with 21 wind farms in operation and more proposed, including Lighthouse Wind. The project would have up to 70 turbines and produce enough electricity for 53,000 homes, according to Somerset, N.Y., Town Supervisor Dan Engert. Wind energy expansion in the region is hindered by a lack of transmission, as well as policy uncertainty regarding the Production Tax Credit, industry advocates say. American Wind Energy Association Vice President for Government and Public Affairs Rob Gramlich said that Congress should renew the PTC to avoid slowing the industry's growth. Maine regulators to reconsider 2 wind farms after granting approval
Maine's Public Utilities Commission will reopen negotiations for two wind farms that it granted approval for in December. The potential economic benefit of the projects may be different now, as the energy market has changed over the past two months, said Commissioners Mark Vannoy and Carlie McLean. Commissioner David Littell disagreed with the decision, saying that there is no basis to re-evaluate the projects. The Wichita Eagle (Kan.)/The Associated Press (2/25)

European Commission backs energy union proposal
The EU will move forward with the European Commission's proposal for an energy union, the commission said Wednesday. An energy union would reduce the EU's energy dependency on Russia, cut emissions, facilitate energy trading and help in the fight against climate change, according to the European Commission. Europe's "disorderly patchwork on energy policies" are confusing and keep investors away, said the European Wind Energy Association. The New York Times (tiered subscription model) (2/25)
