Interior issues plan for renewables development in Calif. desert
The Interior Department released a plan on Wednesday aimed at balancing energy and conservation in 10.8 million acres of California desert. "This landscape-level plan will support streamlined renewable energy development in the right places while protecting sensitive ecosystems, preserving important cultural heritage and supporting outdoor recreation opportunities," said Interior Secretary Sally Jewell. Some renewable energy trade groups contend the plan significantly limits the potential for development.

Bigger turbines drive down offshore wind costs, exec says
Bigger offshore wind turbines, like Vestas' V164 8-megawatt series, will drive down the cost of offshore wind development in the UK while also providing consumers with affordable, reliable power, according to Dong Energy Executive Vice President Samuel Leupold. Dong plans to use 32 of the machines at its Burbo Bank Extension off the coast of England.

Wis. health department says wind-health study not needed
The Wisconsin Department of Health Services has rejected a multi-county proposal to conduct an investigation into the effects of wind development on human health. "Based on our ongoing review of scientific literature about wind turbines and health, DHS continues to conclude that levels of noise, shadow flicker, and infrasound measured from contemporary wind turbines do not reach exposure levels associated with objectively-verifiable human health concerns, such as decreased sleep quality or elevated blood pressure," spokeswoman Elizabeth Goodsitt said.
