Minn. OKs Xcel plan to increase installed wind capacity by 1,500 MW
The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission approved Xcel Energy's request to add up to 1,500 megawatts of new installed wind capacity to its portfolio in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Michigan and Wisconsin. "This outcome allows us to invest even more in wind, giving customers more renewable energy options," said Chris Clark, president of Xcel Energy -- Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota.

Calif. task force, BOEM discuss potential for offshore renewables
The California Intergovernmental Renewable Energy Task Force held its first meeting with the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management last week to discuss the state's potential for offshore renewable energy development. "California is currently implementing a comprehensive set of climate change policies, including 50% renewable energy target by 2030, and we are interested in learning about how offshore wind could play a role in helping achieve our climate and renewable energy goals," said California Energy Commissioner Karen Douglas.

Deepwater Wind's Block Island offshore wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island is paving the way for US turbine equipment manufacturers interested in entering the market, according to this piece. Although IHS Energy expects US installed offshore wind capacity to only reach 7 gigawatts by 2040, observers say that US suppliers will increasingly vie for a part of the pie.

Union, clean energy collaboration could be mutually beneficial
Partnerships between labor unions and clean energy projects could be mutually beneficial, according to this analysis. Such agreements would provide workers with stable jobs and could help lower the cost of clean energy development by providing projects with a trained, local workforce, say observers.

How much space would a world 100% powered by wind require?
It would take nearly 4 million 2-megawatt land-based turbines operating at 30% efficiency and covering a total space either half the size of Alaska or smaller than Spain -- depending on their spacing -- to provide 100% of the world's electricity, according to Global Wind Energy Council Secretary-General Steve Sawyer. American Wind Energy Association Manager of Industry Data and Analysis John Hensley said that taller, more efficient turbines and offshore machines could reduce that number.

States, groups file suit to prevent power plant carbon rule enforcement
A group of states and business groups filed a lawsuit with the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on Thursday seeking to overturn the Environmental Protection Agency's new rule for power plant emissions under the Clean Air Act and therefore the agency's ability to enforce the Clean Power Plan. Environmental Defense Fund Attorney Tomas Carbonell said the standards are common sense and legally supported.

170 nations sign deal to phase down hydrofluorocarbons
Friday in Rwanda, 170 nations agreed to a legally binding pact to curb the use of hydrofluorocarbons, a chemical often used in refrigerants. This agreement, plus the Paris climate accord, show that "while diplomacy is never easy, we can work together to leave our children a planet that is safer, more prosperous, more secure, and more free than the one that was left for us," said President Barack Obama.

AWEA News
American farmers are harvesting the wind
America's farmers work hard to put food on our tables. And now more and more of them are able to rely on a new cash-crop -- wind energy. Wind power is rapidly growing in America's heartland, supplying enough electricity for 20 million homes, and that's helping keep farms in the family and families on the farm. In honor of National Farmers Day, AWEA released a new video that includes some of the stories heard from farmers and ranchers across the US who have seen the benefits of wind energy firsthand. Watch the new video on community benefits.
