First power expected from Block Island before Thanksgiving
National Grid has almost finished the interconnection work for Deepwater Wind's Block Island offshore wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island, which Deepwater CEO Jeffrey Grybowski says is expected to reach first power "right before Thanksgiving." Duke Energy Renewables, meanwhile, said it has been contracted to provide the project with monitoring and control services after it becomes operational.

EIA: 11 states sourced at least 10% of electricity from wind in 2015

Eleven US states acquired 10% or more of their total electricity needs from wind last year, according to the Energy Information Administration. The report attributed the nation's growing installed wind capacity to "a combination of technology and policy changes."

14% of electricity in Colo. comes from wind, EIA says
Wind energy represents 14% of the electricity produced in Colorado, according to a report from the Energy Information Administration. The state with the largest share of wind energy production was Iowa, with 31%.

LEEDCo seeks deal with Fred Olsen to build Ohio offshore wind farm
The Lake Erie Energy Development Corp. has tapped Fred Olsen Renewables to build its 20.7-megawatt Icebreaker offshore wind project off the coast of Cleveland in Lake Erie and hopes to reach a deal by the end of the year, LEEDCo President Lorry Wagner said at the American Wind Energy Association's Offshore WINDPOWER 2016 conference in Warwick, R.I.

Fishermen's to close PPA for 24-MW offshore wind demo in N.J.
Fishermen's Energy is preparing to finalize a long-term power purchase agreement with an undisclosed buyer for its proposed 24-megawatt offshore wind demo in New Jersey, according to the company. "That is essentially the last hurdle we have to make this project the next project we'll see in the water," said CEO Chris Wissemann, adding that the project could be operational within two years.

Fugro plans marine geotechnical review for Mass. offshore wind site
Consulting firm Fugro has agreed to conduct a marine geotechnical review for a potential offshore wind site off the coast of Massachusetts owned by Vineyard Wind, formerly known as OffshoreMW, according to the companies. Fugro said the review would take two to three weeks to complete.

Deepwater won't participate in N.Y. offshore wind lease, says exec
Deepwater Wind will not participate in an upcoming offshore wind leasing round in New York state, said President Chris van Beek. "We think it's better to have the lease and the power purchase agreement together, like in Europe," he said.

IEA predicts strong renewables growth globally, falling costs
The International Energy Agency expects renewables to be the largest source of new power capacity additions globally through 2020, thanks to continued reductions in costs for wind and solar energy. IEA's Renewable Energy Medium-Term Market Report forecasts the global addition of approximately 825,000 megawatts of renewable energy capacity by 2020, a 42% increase from 2013 levels. Read more.
