Industry Update
Opinion: Light regulatory environment helps Texas lead in clean energyLight regulatory policies, like not requiring state and county permits for wind turbines, and the fact that Texas has its own electrical grid and can build competitive renewable energy zones are reasons why the state has become a national leader in clean energy, writes Texas Railroad Commission Chairwoman Christi Craddick. "Our commitment to develop renewable sources, to tap the potential of our shale formations, and to develop the technology needed to make our air cleaner and our economy stronger means Texas remains positioned as the nation's energy leader," she writes.San Antonio Express-News (tiered subscription model) (4/16)US can cut offshore wind costs by building on existing research, says expertThe US could make offshore wind more affordable and ease the process for developing new projects by doing two things: looking at Europe's 16 years of experience and building on research already gathered in the Mid-Atlantic offshore wind region, writes Gary Griggs, director of the Institute of Marine Sciences and Long Marine Laboratory. "As long as we continue to oppose and delay well-planned renewable energy projects, the more fossil fuels we will continue to burn and the more greenhouse gas we will emit, with all of their impacts," he writes.Santa Cruz Sentinel (Calif.) Project Focus
Saudi Arabia plans 30 wind, solar projects over 10-year periodSaudi Arabia, which has pledged $50 billion to increase electrical generation and curb oil use, will use part of that total to add 30 wind and solar projects over the next 10 years, Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih said today. The country also plans to source 10% of its total electricity needs from renewables by 2023, he said.Bloomberg (4/17)

Opinion: Iowa county leads state in wind energy
(Jean-Francois Monier/AFP/Getty Images)Wind has been taking off all over Iowa over the past 20 years, especially in O'Brien County -- the home of two new wind farms with a combined capacity of 752 megawatts, writes Ty Rushing. MidAmerican Energy Project Manager of Wind Development Scott Cobb, whose company owns one of those projects, touted the county's transmission system and a symbiotic relationship with Northwest Iowa residents.Sioux City Journal (Iowa) (4/16)
NREL research helps US move toward energy independence, says observerThe National Renewable Energy Laboratory's facility in Golden, Colo., has played a critical role in the US' gradual shift toward energy independence by funding research in wind, solar and other clean energy technology, writes Greg Dobbs. He argues that Congress -- and especially lawmakers from Colorado -- should object to budget cuts to the NREL.The Denver Post (4/16)
Policy Watch
Opinion: US lawmakers should show leadership in renewablesThe Trump administration is potentially missing out on a great opportunity to invest in and show leadership in clean energy technology, such as wind and solar, writes Judy Zabriskie. "I urge Speaker [Paul] Ryan and Sen. Ron Johnson to address the seriousness of this problem and show leadership in advocating for responsible renewable energy technologies for the future of their constituents health as well as the financial advantage that creating these technologies would give our country," she writes.Wisconsin State Journal (Madison) (4/17)Energy secretary orders 60-day power grid studyEnergy Secretary Rick Perry has launched a 60-day review of the nation's electrical grid to see whether pro-wind and solar policies are expediting the closure of fossil fuel facilities he says are necessary to grid stability. Brian McCormack, Perry's chief of staff, has been tasked with creating a plan for understanding whether regulations, tax credits and other policies "are responsible for forcing the premature retirement of baseload power plants."Bloomberg (4/15)Opinion: Trump ignores wind, solar's ability to create jobsPresident Donald Trump's pledge to bring back coal jobs shows that he is ignoring market forces, including the rise of low-cost natural gas and jobs in the wind and solar fields, writes Michael McInerney. "Although he no doubt thinks of himself as a strong leader, his policy on the environment is either clueless or cynical," he writes.Chicago Tribune (tiered subscription model) (4/16)
AWEA News
PJM study quantifies wind's value for building reliable, resilient power systemThe largest grid operator in the US just released an innovative study that quantifies the reliability of possible future energy mixes. It found that portfolios with very large amounts of wind energy, dozens of times greater than the current mix, scored among the highest for reliability and resilience. Read more.
