Private investors are financing renewable energy and infrastructure projects to bring clean energy from rural areas to urban ones. "I think success will beget success," said Michael Skelly, president of Clean Line Energy Partners, noting that development timelines of up to 10 years have presented barriers to equity investors before.

Opinion: Renewable energy's progress will prevail over policy changes
Despite President Donald Trump's executive orders permitting TransCanada to build the Keystone XL pipeline and supporting coal mining leases on federal lands, renewable energy will prevail because it is more cost effective and far less environmentally damaging, writes Adnan Al-Daini. Canada's Alberta Electricity System Operator has released the first phase in a three-part 400-megawatt procurement process for 5 gigawatts of renewable energy; deliverables focus on Alberta meeting its 30% clean energy target by 2030. Vendors must propose using existing distribution or transmission systems; operations are expected to begin by the end of 2019.

First Merkur nacelle completed in France, destined for German North Sea
General Electric has completed the first Merkur nacelle; it was constructed at the Saint-Nazaire factory in France and will travel to GE's Netherlands operations hub before installation in the German North Sea. John Lavelle of GE, speaking of the 6-MW Haliade turbine, commended Merkur's role in continuing GE's export business while GE pursues new projects.

Americans can protect the environment while growing the economy, writes Jim Desmond, The Nature Conservancy's state director for Oregon. Although the current administration is trying to reverse progress on carbon emissions, choices such as renewable energy proved to help reduce emissions in Oregon by 12% from 1997 to 2014 while real GDP grew by 80%, Desmond writes.

Iron Mountain data center powered 100% by renewable electricity
A power purchase agreement with NJR Clean Energy Ventures has allowed Iron Mountain to completely power its data center business by renewables. Iron Mountain, a global data storage and information management company, signed with NJR last year to generate its electricity from NJR's Ringer Hill Wind Farm in Pennsylvania.

India wind power installations continue to increase
Expected wind energy installations for 2017 will keep India on pace to more than double installed capacity by 2022, according to turbine maker Suzlon Energy. New wind power installations are expected to increase for a third straight year by March 2018.

Texas lawmaker introduces wind farm siting bill
Texas state Rep. James Frank introduced a bill that would prohibit wind energy developers from receiving tax credits for having wind farms within 34.5 miles of a military base. "This is a solution in search of a problem," said Apex Clean Energy consultant Dave Belote, who is a retired US Air Force colonel.
