Firm advances Mass. shared offshore wind transmission projectTransmission developer Anbaric Development Partners has secured approval from federal regulators to move forward with a shared transmission project for offshore wind farms off the coast of Massachusetts, according to the company. ADP said the project could carry up to 2.4 gigawatts of installed offshore wind capacity, and that it hopes to accept bids from interested project developers during Massachusetts' next round of request for proposals.ReNews (UK) (2/15)Wis. city could become a renewable energy leader, says advocateThere's an opportunity for local governments, including cities, states and school districts, to fill the gap in renewable energy leadership led by state and federal entities, said Renew Wisconsin Program and Policy Director Michael Vickerman. He argued before the Sustainable La Crosse Commission on Thursday that La Crosse, Wis., is well-suited to step into that role.La Crosse Tribune (Wis.) (2/16)Opinion: Trump should support renewables for job creationPresident Donald Trump should support renewables like wind and solar for their ability to drive job creation, writes Winona LaDuke, touting Minnesota's potential for both industries. "We are as sunny as Florida and have, like states to the west, vast solar and wind potential," she writes.Duluth News Tribune (Minn.) (2/15)

Tenaska secures 25-year PPA for Mo. wind farmIndependent energy firm Tenaska has arranged a 25-year, 236-megawatt power purchase agreement with Associated Electric Cooperative for its Tenaska Clear Creek Energy Center in Missouri, said the companies. "With our experience managing significant amounts of wind power on our system, Clear Creek is a good fit for our power-supply portfolio," said Associated CEO and General Manager David Tudor.North American Windpower online (2/15)Statoil: Floating offshore wind pilot is a successStatoil's Hywind Scotland floating offshore wind farm pilot project fared far better than expected during its first three months in service, suggesting the technology could be useful in other deep-water applications, according to Statoil. "Knowing that up to 80% of the offshore wind resources globally are in deep waters where traditional bottom fixed installations are not suitable, we see great potential for floating offshore wind, in Asia, on the west coast of North America and in Europe," said Statoil New Energy Solutions Executive Vice President Irene Rummelhoff.United Press International (2/15)

(Tobias Schwarz/AFP/Getty Images)Orsted and the University of Oxford in England have a signed a five-year deal in which the duo will work together to improve the design of offshore wind turbines. Orsted Head of R&D for Wind Power Christina Aabo said the agreement with Oxford will "further mature our foundation designs to support even bigger turbines in even deeper waters, lowering costs and risk level at the same time."CNBC (2/15)
Report: Renewables close to matching nuclear outputThe amount of electricity generated from renewables in the US is almost as much as output from the nation's 99 nuclear power plants, according to a report from the Business Council on Sustainable Energy and Bloomberg New Energy Finance. Nuclear power provides about 19% of the country's electricity, while renewables make up 18% of the country's energy mix.The Examiner (Washington, D.C.) (2/15)Analysis: European distribution hub may shake up global wind industryThe $1.8 billion North Sea Wind Power Hub proposed for England's coast has the potential to revolutionize the global offshore wind industry by revamping how companies and countries share electricity, writes Anca Gagiuc. The TenneT-sponsored model calls for the creation of a man-made island that would source up to 30 gigawatts of installed offshore wind capacity from various projects in the North Sea and then share it through long-distance cables with six European countries.Commercial Property Executive (2/16)
Policy Watch
Opinion: Wind could offset closure of Calif. nuclear plantThe Diablo Canyon nuclear site in California is closing and "[t]he Central Coast has two golden opportunities to replace the energy, jobs and tax revenue that will be lost," writes Michael Segor. He proposes pursuing offshore wind development off the coast of the state and/or implementing a Community Choice Energy program that would allow electricity customers to support wind and solar projects. The Tribune (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) BCSE releases Sustainable Energy in America Factbook: More good news for windThe Business Council for Sustainable Energy released its 2018 Sustainable Energy in America Factbook yesterday, and the findings show more good news for wind power. Notably, BCSE found wind and solar capacity has increased 471% since 2008. Even better, Americans are spending the smallest percentage of their income on electricity than at any other time on record.
