New England wind power proposals overtake natural gas for first time
The number of proposed wind power projects in New England has surpassed the number of natural gas generation proposals for the first time, said Gordon van Welie, CEO and president of regional grid operator ISO New England. However, he acknowledged that land-based wind farms will need more transmission lines and that offshore wind costs are still coming down.

Renewables become Minn.'s No. 2 electricity source
Renewable energy has toppled nuclear energy to become Minnesota's second-largest source of electricity after coal, according to a report by Bloomberg New Energy Finance. "We found a very dramatic uptick in the amount of renewables being built in the state in 2017, and surprisingly, solar was actually the main contributor to the renewable build mix, whereas wind has historically been the lead renewable energy being deployed," BNEF analyst Rachel Luo said.

Maine governor's proposal restricting wind projects stymied
Maine Gov. Paul LePage's proposal to restrict expedited permitting for wind energy development risks being defeated amid a lack of consensus between the state Senate and the House of Representatives over which legislative committee should deal with the bill. LePage's bill would shrink the expedited permitting area and introduce stricter rules concerning the projects' visual impact.
