Wind, solar added 98% of new US generating capacity in Jan., Feb.

Ninety-eight percent of all new electrical generation added in the US during January and February came from wind and solar, according to a SUN DAY Campaign report based on Federal Energy Regulatory Commission data. The report said renewables would likely continue to expand quickly through at least March 2021.

AWEA's Kiernan: State-level policies are a factor in wind farm placement
States are a flurry of activity for wind development amid the phaseout of wind energy Production Tax Credit, and state-level policies and infrastructure guide where projects are placed, said American Wind Energy Association CEO Tom Kiernan. Observers speculate that Wyoming's lack of transmission infrastructure and its higher taxes make it a less attractive option for investors.

Iowa needs more wind technicians, says college professor
Wind technicians enjoy excellent pay, job security and affordable education options in Iowa, yet schools like Des Moines Area Community College are struggling to fill their wind-related classes, said DMACC professor James Fitzpatrick. He said applicants don't need any experience in electrical or mechanical repair, and that DMACC will teach them all the skills necessary to be successful in the field.

Kan. wind farm to feature Siemens Gamesa machines
Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has won a contract to supply an undisclosed wind farm in Kansas with 98 SWT 2.3-megawatt 108 turbines for a total capacity of 225 MW, according to the company. It added that it would produce the blades for the project in Fort Madison, Iowa.

Acciona Energy plans 2 new wind farms in Chile
Acciona Energy plans to build four new renewable energy projects in Chile over the next three years, including two new wind farms, according to the company. "We are undertaking major investments over this three-year period, which will considerably strengthen our presence in the thriving renewable energy sector in Chile," CEO of South America Jose Ignacio Escobar said.

German wind turbine maintenance provider Deutsche Windtechnik opened its first office in Houston in November and is now active in the US market, says the company. Global installed wind capacity to hit 840 GW by 2022, report says
The world's total installed wind capacity hit 539 gigawatts at the end of 2017 and is expected to reach 840 GW by 2022, according to the Global Wind Energy Council. "Wind power is leading the charge in the transition away from fossil fuels and continues to blow away the competition on price, performance and reliability," said Secretary-General Steve Sawyer.

Siemens Gamesa emerges as world's leading turbine manufacturer
Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has surpassed Vestas as the world's leading turbine manufacturing in 2017, adding 9.43 gigawatts of new installed wind capacity worldwide, according to MAKE Consulting and GlobalData. Vestas installed 7.52 GW for the period.

Iowa county approves 35-turbine wind farm
RPM Access subsidiary Washburn Wind Energy has secured a special permit from the Black Hawk County, Iowa, Board of Adjustment to move forward with a proposed 70-megawatt, 35-turbine wind farm. Next, the company will carry out studies and seek building permits for the project.
