Kennett Township, Pa., has set a goal to source 100% of its municipal electricity needs from clean energy by 2035 and for heat and transportation by 2050. "Moving to sustainable energy sources will reduce global heating and open doors to a good future for our children," said resident Owen Owens.

Opinion: Offshore wind poised to become a major US energy source
Market forces and states like Massachusetts are propelling offshore wind development forward, paving the way for the industry to become a leading US energy source, write Matthew Lackner and Erin Baker of University of Massachusetts Amherst. The Energy Department expects the nation's installed offshore wind capacity to reach 86 gigawatts by 2050, but they argue that falling costs in Europe and federal efforts to combat climate change could make that figure even larger.

Orsted seeks planning permission for UK offshore wind farm
Orsted is seeking regulatory approval in the UK to advance its Hornsea 3 offshore wind farm, which will feature up to 300 turbines for a capacity up to 2.4 gigawatts, according to the company. The Planning Inspectorate is expected to reach a decision by June 11.

LiftWerx, Siemens Gamesa develop new lifting device for wind industry
Engineering firm LiftWerx and Siemens Gamesa have introduced the RotorHook, a new up-tower lifting system that would eliminate the need for traditional cranes when connecting a fully assembled turbine rotor to the main shaft. "The RotorHook will drive down O&M costs, improve turbine uptime, increase safety and reduce the reliance on larger, more expensive traditional cranes," LiftWerx said.

TPI Composites, Vestas expand blade manufacturing deal in Mexico
Vestas has extended an existing multiyear supply contract with TPI Composites to add two new turbine blade manufacturing lines in Mexico, according to the companies. The company will manufacture blades for Vestas' 4-megawatt turbine series.

Minn. lawmaker proposes lighting requirement for turbines
Minnesota state Rep. Chris Swedzinski has introduced a bill that would require all wind turbines to feature radar-activated lighting systems. EDF Renewables Project Development Manager Shanelle Montana touted EDF's technologies regarding turbine lighting and praised Swedzinski's interest in the industry.
