Sony has set a goal to source all of the electricity for its business sites from renewable energy sources by 2040. The company has joined RE100, a global group committed to using 100% renewable electricity that counts companies such as Microsoft and Google among its members.

Calif. governor signs bill mandating 100% carbon-free electricity by 2045
California Gov. Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 100, which calls for the state to source 100% of its retail electricity from carbon-free sources by 2045. "California is committed to doing whatever is necessary to meet the existential threat of climate change," said Brown.

Opinion: Everyone will benefit from US offshore wind growth

Senvion to supply Mich. wind farm with 20 turbines
Heritage Sustainable Energy's 80-megawatt Garden II project in Delta County, Mich., will feature 20 4-MW 140 turbines from Senvion. "Garden II is further proof that wind energy is competitive and cost-effective even in medium-wind regions," says Senvion North America CEO Lance Marram.

Invenergy weighs Iowa projects
Invenergy recently proposed a pair of wind farms in Iowa that would feature nearly 170 turbines, and spokesperson Beth Conley says the company will complete the necessary reviews and hold a public comment period for moving forward. Some residents in Sac and Ida counties are concerned about sound and other considerations.

WindPlus orders MHI Vestas machines for Portuguese project
WindPlus, a consortium featuring EDP Renovaveis and Mitsubishi, has ordered three 8.4-megawatt V164 turbines from MHI Vestas Offshore Wind for a 25-MW floating offshore wind farm slated for the coast of Portugal.

Calif. may be the next frontier for offshore wind
A federal-state task force will meet Monday to discuss offshore wind along the Pacific Coast, potentially clearing the way for projects to advance. No specifics have been released, but Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Chief of Staff Alex Fitzsimmons notes that the Trump administration says wind is "affordable and reliable" and that offshore wind "has the potential to contribute to reliability."

Sierra Club: Duke IRP should incorporate wind
North Carolina regulators are reviewing a pair of integrated resource plans from Duke Energy, outlining its strategy to shutter aging coal-burning power plants. The Sierra Club criticized the plan, which relies heavily on natural gas, and says it should have incorporated more wind energy.

Ohio PSB agrees to delay wind farm hearings
The Ohio Power Siting Board has agreed to a request from Apex Clean Energy to reschedule a pair of hearings for the 58-turbine Republic Wind project. Apex's Republic Wind company says it plans to amend its initial proposal for the project.
