GE unit wins federal funding for wind cybersecurity tech
GE Global Research has secured a $4.8 million grant from the Energy Department to develop new cybersecurity solutions for wind turbines. "We're committed to building the world's first industrial immune system that detects, locates and neutralizes cyber threats just like the human immune system does with viruses that invade the body," Technology Director of Controls and Optimization Justin John said.

Opinion: 100% clean energy goal makes sense for N.J.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy's proposed goal to source 100% of the state's electricity from clean energy sources by 2050 is attainable and more economical than its current fossil fuel-heavy strategy, writes New Jersey Conservation Foundation Executive Director Michele Byers. She argues that the state's Energy Master Plan should rely heavily on wind and solar to meet its goals.

Mich. municipal utility ramps up wind, solar
The Board of Light & Power in Grand Haven, Mich., is signing power purchase agreements with wind and solar projects ahead of its 2020 plan to shutter the Sims coal-burning power plant. If all of its current deals move forward, the municipal utility will likely source 20% of its total electricity from renewables by 2021.

Expert: Wind doesn't contribute to global warming
A study from Harvard indicating that the widespread use of wind turbines in the US would increase air temperatures refers to local heating, not global warming, says Grid Strategies Vice President Michael Goggin. "If the paper instead looked across the global and long-lasting timescales that matter, renewable resources would fare hundreds of times if not infinitely better than fossil resources," he says.

Fact Check: No, wind turbines do not cause climate change
Two researchers released a study that suggests wind turbines contribute to climate change based on unrealistic assumptions. "This is by no means what future wind power in the U.S. will ever look like. It is an interesting theoretical exercise at best," said Cristina Archer, a wind expert from the University of Delaware. Wind remains one of the most effective and affordable ways to reduce carbon pollution.
