Microsoft signs 15-year PPA with Pa. wind farm
Microsoft has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement with TransAlta Renewables for its 90-megawatt Big Level wind project under development in Hector Township, Pa. "Working with companies like TransAlta to bring new projects online, especially wind projects in states outside the Wind Belt, is good for our business, the community and the clean energy economy," says Microsoft General Manager of Energy Brian Janous.

NRDC official: Renewables are taking off in Ohio
Growing demand, falling costs and advocacy efforts are paying off for Ohio renewables, resulting in a record surge of proposals, says Natural Resources Defense Council Policy Director for Energy in Ohio Daniel Sawmiller. GM hits 100% wind-powered milestone at Texas site
General Motors officially began sourcing 100% of the total electricity used at its manufacturing site in Arlington, Texas, from wind energy on Oct. 9. The power comes from the 148-megawatt Cactus Flats Wind Farm in Concho County.

Drone inspection successful at R.I. offshore wind farm
ULC Robotics' recent drone-based inspection of Deepwater Wind's five-turbine Block Island offshore wind farm in Rhode Island was a success, says ULC President Gregory Penza. "Using drones, ULC Robotics' aerial services team was able to deliver more detailed data without the risks associated with climbing up to the platform, improving the safety of our team," adds Deepwater Wind Manager of Operations and Maintenance and Marine Affairs Captain John O'Keeffe.

Feds OK MISO request to add merchant HVDC lines
Midcontinent Independent System Operator has secured federal approval to create a process that allows for the addition of merchant high-voltage direct current transmission lines. MHVDC lines facilitate the flow of renewables, such as a proposed project from SOO Green Renewable Rail that would carry wind between Iowa and Illinois.

Ill. Commerce Commission extols the benefits of wind energy
Illinois' potential for wind development and the industry's benefits were a hot topic during an Illinois Commerce Commission policy meeting last week. "Wind energy is one of the fastest growing sources of renewable energy in the United States and, in 2017, provided more than 6% of Illinois' electric generation," says acting Commissioner Anastasia Palivos.

Okla. AG gives NextEra until Monday to resolve wind farm issue
Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter has extended the deadline for NextEra Energy Resources to resolve an airspace-related issue for a proposed wind farm with the Defense Department. The company will have until Monday to arrange a mitigation plan.

R.I. gubernatorial candidates support renewables
Rhode Island gubernatorial candidates Gov. Gina Raimondo, Allan Fung and Joe Trillo all support renewables to some degree as part of their platform. Raimondo, in particular, supports offshore wind and says the state should be a renewable energy leader.
