Siemens Gamesa has been awarded a contract to supply Disa, a utility in the Canary Islands, with 11 G114 2.1-megawatt turbines for two projects on Tenerife. The projects will have a combined capacity of 23.1 MW.

BOEM OKs site assessment for Mass. offshore wind farm
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has signed off on Dong Energy and Eversource's site assessment for their proposed 1-gigawatt Bay State offshore wind project in Massachusetts, said the parties. "We are thrilled to be the first in the country to receive this approval from BOEM, and to be a part of this huge step forward for the offshore wind industry in the US," said Dong Energy North America General Manager Thomas Brostrom.

Minneapolis to acquire wind, solar through Xcel program

The City of Minneapolis has joined Xcel Energy's Renewable*Connect program, through which it will acquire wind and solar generation to power the Minneapolis Convention Center and one of its two water treatment facilities. "We're excited to roll out this unique and affordable program that gives our customers more renewable energy options generated right here in Minnesota," said Chris Clark, president of Xcel Energy for Minnesota, South Dakota and North Dakota.

Hawaiian PUC approves utility's 100% by 2045 renewables plan
Hawaiian Electric has secured approval from the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission to move ahead with its plan to source 100% of its electricity from renewables by 2045. The plan outlines several goals, including purchasing almost 400 megawatts of installed renewable energy capacity by 2021.

Wis. college professor kicks off 1,250-mile bike ride for wind
University of Wisconsin-Madison associate professor James Tinjum started a 1,250-mile bike ride this month that will take him across four Midwestern states and more than 50 wind farms in an effort to raise awareness about the industry, especially in Wisconsin, he said. "Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, even Michigan -- all have capacity ranging from higher than us to an order of magnitude higher than Wisconsin," he added.

House appropriations bill could hinder Md. offshore wind growth
The House Appropriations Committee has advanced a spending bill for the Interior Department and Environmental Protection Agency for fiscal 2018 that contains a rider that would limit the use of federal funds for offshore wind turbines more than 24 nautical miles away from Maryland's coast. The bill could impede Deepwater Wind and US Wind's projects near Ocean City, Md.

Australian government risks losing clean energy momentum, says GE exec
The Australian government's failure to establish a clean energy target undermines its credibility among global leaders and may cost its momentum on clean energy, said GE Renewable President and CEO Jerome Pecresse. Without a target, "the ability of Australia to meet its Paris commitment will probably become less and less credible as time goes by," he added.
