Daniel Ross, Truthout: The highly toxic hydrofluoric acid continues to be used as a catalyst at 50 refineries around the US despite the existence of alternatives. If released into the environment, the acid can travel for miles in a lethal ground-hugging cloud, potentially affecting up to 18 million people living around these refineries. Thirty-two refineries have been cited for over 1,000 separate violations of safety rules.
