AWEA's Darin: Wind can help Nev. meet its clean energy goals
Nevada has excellent wind resources and is surrounded by other states with similar assets, putting the state in a strong position to realize the industry's benefits, writes Tom Darin, the American Wind Energy Association's senior western state policy director. AEP nixes $4.5B Wind Catcher project amid regulatory challenges
American Electric Power has canceled its proposed $4.5 billion, 2-gigawatt Wind Catcher Energy Connection project after failing to secure regulatory approval in Texas. "To realize the full benefits of Wind Catcher for customers, timely approvals were required from all jurisdictions so we could complete the project by the end of 2020 and be eligible for 100% of the federal production tax credit," said AEP President, CEO and Chairman Nicholas Akins.

NextEra begins building 160-MW wind farm in Neb.
NextEra Energy Resources began building the 160-megawatt Sholes Wind Energy Center outside Norfolk, Neb., on Friday. The project has a 20-year power purchase agreement with the Omaha Public Power District for 100% of its output.

    MAKE: US ramping up wind development ahead of PTC phaseout

    Iowa utility to swap nuclear PPA for wind generation
    Iowa utility Alliant Energy has reached an agreement with NextEra Energy Resources to end a nuclear energy power purchase agreement it holds with the company five years early and to switch to output from repowered wind farms, instead. Alliant says the deal, which must secure regulatory approval, would save ratepayers almost $300 million over a 21-year period.

    Va. picks firm to help map offshore wind strategy
    The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy has tapped BVG Associates to lead its offshore wind development strategy. "It's time for Virginia to take significant steps forward to secure our clean energy future, and I look forward to working with BVG Associates to establish Virginia as the prime location for the offshore wind industry," Gov. Ralph Northam says.

    N.J. BPU proposes funding process for offshore wind projects
    The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities has introduced Offshore Renewable Energy Certificates, a rule that would provide a basis for funding offshore wind development within the state. Deepwater Wind and other firms have expressed support for the proposal.
