Study finds wind the lowest-cost energy source in much of the US
Wind is the most economical energy source in several US regions, including the Midwest and Texas, the High Plains and parts of the Northeast, according to a University of Texas at Austin study. Researchers have developed a map based on the levelized cost of electricity to help stakeholders visualize the cost of various energy sources in the US.

Dominion Energy advances 2-turbine offshore wind pilot in Va.
Virginia's State Corporation Commission approved Dominion Energy's request to move forward with a two-turbine offshore wind farm on Friday, while agreeing to a provision that would levy the risk of the $300 million project on the utility's customers. The project is expected to begin operations in December 2020.

Analysis: Transmission capacity hinders Maine wind industry
Maine has installed 375 turbines with a combined capacity of 923 megawatts since the passage of the Maine Wind Energy Act 10 years ago, but challenges remain for the industry, writes Tux Turkel. Vestas has won a contract to supply Enel Green Power with 41 V117 3.6-megawatt turbines for the 148-MW Oyster Bay project in South Africa. The agreement includes a five-year service and maintenance deal.

Danish university, industry partner to combat rain erosion
The Technical University of Denmark is working with Siemens Gamesa, Vestas and LM Wind Power to curb "leading edge erosion" -- a problem in which raindrops wear down turbine blades. "It is advantageous that competitors can work together to find a common solution," said Peder Riis Nickelsen, a technical manager at Siemens Gamesa.

Report: Global floating offshore wind capacity could hit 95 GW by 2050
Floating offshore wind turbines could account for up to 95 gigawatts of the world's generating capacity by 2050, with 20 GW of the total located in the UK, according to an ORE Catapult report. "Floating wind is an important counterpart to fixed offshore wind and will make an increasingly important contribution to realizing the full potential of the sector," the report says.

Skills shortage looms for UK offshore wind industry, survey shows
The UK is poised to add almost 29 gigawatts of new installed offshore wind capacity by 2032 -- a shift that could result in a serious labor shortage for the industry, according to an Energy & Utility Skills report. The sector may need to employ 36,000 individuals by 2032, up from 10,000 in 2017.
