Mr. Daniel Stafford
40 N. Tower Road #9N
Oak Brook, IL 60523-1120

Dear Mr. Stafford:

Thank you for contacting me about the Protecting States' Rights to Promote American Energy Security Act. I share your concerns and appreciate hearing from you.

This bill would amend the Mineral Leasing Act to prohibit the Department of Interior from enforcing any federal regulations regarding hydraulic fracturing in any state that already has regulations, guidance, or permit requirements for hydraulic fracturing.

Many are concerned about the use of hydraulic fracturing in natural gas production. Hydraulic fracturing, or the creation of fractures in rocks with highly pressurized liquid, has helped increase natural gas production from unconventional sources. It has raised concerns because of the possibility that underground sources of drinking water may become contaminated.

In order to ensure the safety of our citizens and our environment I believe we need strong and consistent fracking regulations.

This bill has been referred to the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. I will keep your concerns as I continue to fight for safe and responsible ways to address our energy needs.

Thank you again for contacting me. Please feel free to keep in touch.

Sincerely,
Richard J. Durbin
United States Senator

The Climate Reality Project
Apply to become a Climate Reality Leader today!

Dear Daniel,

For us here at Climate Reality, the holiday season was a time for celebrating with friends and family and a time for reflecting on what we want to accomplish in the year ahead. And if you're like us, we hope you remembered to include working for a better future among your New Year's resolutions.

If one of your resolutions this year is to make a difference in the fight for a safer climate, we have the best way to help you check that off your list early. Join the ranks of our Climate Reality Leadership Corps and apply to our Africa training in Johannesburg, South Africa from March 12-14.

Because let's face it, we can't wait any longer to take action on climate change and the solution begins with us. We hope you'll take the next step right now -- and start 2014 off on the right foot.

After all, this might be the most important resolution you ever make. All around the world, real people are experiencing the devastating effects of climate change in their every day life. In Australia, 2013 went down in record books as the hottest year ever with bushfires devouring thousands of homes and acres across the country. Extreme rainfall and floods left communities from the Mississippi Valley to Beijing underwater. And parts of Africa suffered record heat and flooding episodes that drove people from their homes.

The time to act is now. So take a moment to review your list of resolutions. Then apply to become a Climate Reality Leader today and join former Vice President Al Gore, and nearly 6,000 people in more than 100 countries, including people just like you, who have decided to make a difference.

We're counting on you. Our planet is counting on you. Future generations are counting on you.

Thank you for your dedication to this important cause,

The Climate Reality Team
