Report: Average term for wind PPA in Q3 was 13 years | Energy Secretary Perry to step down | Funding innovation: The Wind Wildlife Research Fund  |  Web Version October 18, 2019 News for wind power professionals and advocates SIGN UP ⋅   FORWARD ADVERTISEMENT Industry Update Report: Average term for wind PPA in Q3 was 13 years The average length of power purchase agreements with wind farms fell from 13.5 years in the second quarter of 2019 to 13 years in the third, according to LevelTen. In a survey of 33 wind companies, 24% said they expect competition and the expiration of tax credits to have the greatest effect on PPA prices in 2020. North American Windpower online (10/17)      Energy Secretary Perry to step down US Energy Secretary Rick Perry says he will resign by year-end. Perry says in a letter to President Donald Trump that the US is close to energy independence. The Associated Press (10/17)      Funding innovation: The Wind Wildlife Research Fund Continuous innovation and creative thinking are characteristics that define American wind power. A prime example of this is the Wind Wildlife Research Fund, a proactive approach led by the wind industry to achieve a sustainable clean energy future. The Fund is a unique, industry-led initiative managed through the American Wind Wildlife Institute that pools resources to advance collaborative research on wind-wildlife interactions. It has two other wind farms under development in the country. North American Windpower online (10/17)      Economy, Energy & Trends Calif. county going it alone to become 100% renewable Humboldt County, Calif., is taking its plans to source 100% of its electricity from renewables by 2030 into its own hands, considering microgrids and other options that Redwood Coast Energy Authority Executive Director Matthew Marshall says could serve as a model for other areas. The plan calls for offshore wind to account for 43% of its energy mix by 2030. Times-Standard (Eureka, Calif.) (10/17)      N.Y. PSC green lights 316-MW lithium-ion battery project The New York Public Service Commission has approved the development of a 316-megawatt lithium-ion battery project in Long Island City, with the first stage expected to launch in 2021. The project is expected to help Consolidated Edison curb fossil fuel use and bring more wind and solar into the electric grid. Bloomberg (tiered subscription model) (10/17)      Scottish team sees slower-than-expected growth for floating wind The world may have an installed floating offshore wind capacity of 4.3 gigawatts by 2030, contrary to earlier forecasts of 12 GW to 15 GW by that time, according to the University of Strathclyde in Scotland. While floating wind can benefit from offshore wind's supply chain and momentum, some projects aren't coming to fruition and companies may underestimate permitting challenges, it says.
