The Ecology Center's October report on hazardous chemicals in smart phones was ranked as one of the top 12 stories of 2012 by GreenBiz.com, a newsletter that reports on issues of sustainability and environmental responsibility in business.

Ann Arbor 350 organizing for Feb. 17 climate rally in D.C.


Ann Arbor 350, a program of the Ecology Center working on practical and local solutions to climate change, is coordinating buses for the Feb. 17 #ForwardonClimate President's Day rally in Washington, D.C. "We need to move President Obama to take immediate action on climate," according to Monica Patel, policy specialist at the Ecology Center and coordinator of Ann Arbor 350.

Sales of hybrids and electric vehicles set new record

December brought good news on sales of electric vehicles, both in monthly numbers and the year-end reports, and overall 2012 sales make it the "greenest new automobile fleet ever."

"The growth in sales of these alternative-fuel vehicles is good for the environment, and a very promising indication for the sustainability of the industry in the long run," according to Charles Griffith, climate & energy programs director at the Ecology Center.

'(Re)Imagining a Fair Food System' at annual food summit


Foodies across southeastern Michigan are gearing up for Washtenaw County's fifth annual HomeGrown Local Food Summit, which will be held on Friday, Feb. 22. Ecology Center staff members have been involved in the planning of the summit for the past few years, especially Hillary Bisnett, director of the Ecology Center's Healthy Food in Health Care program.

Sheep and lambs essential ingredients of local food production


One of the main focuses of the Ecology Center's Healthy Food in Health Care program is to support local food production, according to director Hillary Bisnett. "We also want to shift the conversation toward supporting a sustainable food system, and local lamb farming is an important part of that system," Bisnett said.
