The Office of Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy said that California's coast could support an installed offshore wind capacity of almost 1 terawatt -- 13 times the combined capacity of every land-based wind farm under operation in the US. The San Diego Union-Tribune (6/16)       Vestas signs conditional deal to supply Iowa project with 1,000 turbines Vestas has signed a conditional agreement to supply MidAmerican Energy's Wind XI project in Iowa with 1,000 V110 2-megawatt turbines. Vestas said that the deal with the 2-gigawatt project includes a five-year service agreement. "This project builds on our recent success financing and constructing the nearby 204 MW Shannon wind farm in Texas and, like the Shannon project, takes advantage of the recent extension of renewable energy tax incentives in the United States," said Alterra Vice President of Wind Operations Paul Rapp. ReNews.biz (U.K.) (6/16)       Pa. township water authority rejects project proposed by Iberdrola The Lehighton Water Authority has turned down Iberdrola Renewables' request to build three turbines in Lehighton, Pa., on the grounds that it would interfere with the water supply. Iberdrola Director of Business Development for the Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern US Craig Poff said that the board's decision would not stop the company from moving forward with 37 other turbines planned for the area. Observers say that the company may face new opposition in the form of former state House Speaker Tom Finneran, who recently joined the Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound -- one of the groups most opposed to Cape Wind's project. The state is also considering an offshore wind bill that would block the project on two fronts. Iberdrola said that it expects to begin installing turbines in the next few weeks and complete the project this year.
