The commercial operation of Deepwater Wind's Block Island offshore wind farm off the coast of Rhode Island "is a triumph for the American worker and US energy independence, and it's just the beginning," said American Wind Energy Association CEO Tom Kiernan. 6 undisclosed firms begin bidding on N.Y. offshore wind space
Six unnamed bidders are participating in the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management's offshore wind leasing round in New York today, sources say. More than 12 firms have been pre-qualified to participate in the round, including the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority.

A2Sea installs 32 MHI Vestas turbines at UK offshore wind farm
A2Sea has finished installing 32 V164 8-megawatt turbines from MHI Vestas at Dong Energy's Burbo Bank 2 extension project off the coast of England, according to the companies. The offshore wind farm has a total capacity of 258 MW.

Eversource acquires 50% stake in Mass. offshore wind farm
Eversource Energy has purchased a 50% stake in Dong Energy's Bay State Wind offshore wind farm off the coast of Massachusetts, according to the company. The project will likely be built 15 to 25 miles south of Martha's Vineyard.

Gamesa produces record-breaking 1,880 turbines this year
Gamesa has manufactured a record-breaking 1,880 turbines with a combined capacity of 3,880 megawatts so far in 2016, beating its 2008 record of 3,787 MW, according to the company. It said 36% of the total turbines it produced this year were assembled in India, while 28% came from Europe.

Obama administration finalizes new rule for eagle take permits
The Obama administration finalized a rule on Wednesday that updates the process for awarding eagle take permits to wind farms, including a new maximum permit period of 30 years, up from five. American Wind Energy Association CEO Tom Kiernan said AWEA is still reviewing the rule, but that its member companies "strongly support its core purpose -- eagle conservation."
