An editorial from the New York Times titled ‘Misspent Military Dollars’ published February 5th describes the new Bush budget for the Defense Department as, “inaccurate, anachronistic and laden with pork.”
“Our military budget is almost as big as that of all other countries combined,” says Presidential candidate Dennis Kucinich. “While we have unchallenged superiority in military strength, we also have more people without health care than any other advanced industrial country. We cannot continue to increase military spending and still deliver on our domestic agenda for middle class and working Americans. That's voodoo budgeting.”
Bush’s budget proposes to increase Pentagon spending by more than $20 billion. This number does not reflect the additional spending to come on Afghanistan and Iraq, which could add at least $50 billion more to the bill. When these figures are added to the Pentagon's $402 billion request, along with funding for nuclear weapons programs requested by the Department of Energy, the budget total will come close to half a trillion dollars.
“I propose trimming the Pentagon budget by 15% or $60 billion,” continues Kucinich. “In this campaign, I will continue to make a major issue of hometown security -- health care, jobs and education for all -- and misspent Pentagon dollars, even as President Bush continues to press for still more exorbitant military budgets.”
