MAKING MAKEUP LAST
(Lip)sticks and Stones - Born Again Week
If 10,000 Biters use up five broken lipsticks with the help of a lip brush, we'll avert the weight of a makeup artists' tool box in perfectly good makeup (and their containers) from hitting the landfill.
Wanna save some bones? Word. Just follow a few easy tips for making the most outta your makeup. Can't hurt.
The Benefits
  • Not breaking the bank. American women spend about $100 per month on cosmetics and beauty products; these tips help lower your average.
  • Less hurt to the planet. Using every last bit averts waste - and the energy and resources used for new products.

Personally Speaking
Hanah's absolutely fine with public speaking, flying, and spiders, but show her cotton swabs, and she gets chills. Weirdest. Phobia. Ever.

Wanna Try?
  • If your liquid cosmetics (such as foundation or mascara) start to get chunky, soak the sealed container in hot water for 5 minutes to get more life out of it. Or you can add a little H2O and shake it up to get a few more uses.
  • Lipstick down to just a nub (or broken)? Paint the rest on with a lip brush ($3).
  • With tubes (of concealer, for example), when most of the product's gone, cut off the end of the tube to get at the rest inside.
  • Never underestimate the power of cotton swabs - they'll get into those hard-to-reach container corners ($6).
  • Down-and-out makeup brushes can have a second life as keyboard dusters, paintbrushes, even tools for gluing.
  • Check out our Video Bite on getting the most out of other products.

The average woman consumes (as in eats) 4-6 pounds of lipstick during her lifetime.
