AWEA's Wanner: Falling costs will drive US wind gains after PTC ends
The US saw a record-breaking number of power purchase agreements in the first quarter and technological advances will likely continue to drive down costs and help the industry grow after the wind energy Production Tax Credit ends, said American Wind Energy Association research analyst Celeste Wanner said Tuesday at AWEA's Northeast regional conference. Maine Renewable Energy Association Executive Director Jeremy Payne said the Northeast is slated for an offshore wind boom, but various policies are barring the industry's progress in Maine.

Pioneer Transmission connects 70-mile transmission line in Ind.
Duke Energy and American Electric Power's joint venture, Pioneer Transmission, and the Northern Indiana Public Service Co. have launched the first 70-mile phase of a 290-mile transmission line that will carry renewables through Indiana. "This collaborative project with AEP, Duke and NIPSCO strengthens the reliability of the energy system for customers and provides a new pathway for delivering renewable energy, such as wind power, to all customers in the region," noted AEP Transmission Executive Vice President Lisa Barton.

Transmission is important for renewables, says industry exec
State-level transmission policies are important because they lead to the infrastructure development needed to support renewables and the economic benefits the industry has to offer, Clarke Bruno, a senior partner and president at Anbaric Development Partners, said Tuesday during an NJBIZ panel. "I think each state needs to get transmission right," he said.

PSO, Okla. city reach agreement to advance Wind Catcher project
The Public Service Company of Oklahoma reached an agreement with Bixby, Okla., that will allow it to move forward with its proposed Wind Catcher Energy Connection project. PSO says it has agreed to use smaller turbines for the transmission phase of the project and will comply with its right-of-way agreement.

Idaho Power Co. considers 500-MW wind farm in Jerome County
Idaho Power Co. has received a generator interconnection request from a developer seeking to build a 500-megawatt wind farm in Jerome County, says the utility. If approved, the project would likely come online in 2021, pending local regulatory approval.

Vineyard Wind will likely use 2nd staging site in Mass., says exec
Vineyard Wind will primarily use the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal for the construction aspect of its up to 100-turbine offshore wind farm slated for the state's coast, but Chief Development Officer Erich Stephens said Monday that Brayton Point would also likely come into play. "There will be aspects of the construction that have to happen somewhere else besides New Bedford," said Stephens.

Owens Corning signs a deal to produce fiberglass products in China
Owens Corning has signed an agreement with Chongqing Polycomp International to jointly develop a high-modulus fiberglass production plant in China that will produce parts for the wind industry, say the companies. "Wind energy is a key strategic market for Owens Corning representing a major platform for our growth in China -- and globally," adds Owens President of Composites Marcio Sandri.

China Three Gorges still in talks to buy EDP's US arm, sources say
China Three Gorges has reportedly met with utilities in Europe to explore their interest in its possible acquisition of EDP's renewable energy assets in the US, sources say. The sources added that Engie may also be interested in the EDP units.

The Board of Trustees in Monitor Township, Mich., unanimously moved to ban future wind development on Monday, citing concerns about health and sound. The moratorium will go before the city planning commission for review in August.

India commits to 30 GW offshore wind by 2030 goal
The Indian government has adopted a new 5 gigawatts by 2022 target for offshore wind capacity, followed by a goal of 30 GW by 2030, according to India's Ministry of New and Renewable Energy. It is also working toward a land-based wind target of 60 GW by 2022.
