The American Wind Wildlife Institute has launched the Wind Wildlife Research Fund, an initiative that will take an innovative, science-based approach to helping wind projects and wildlife coexist. The American Wind Energy Association and 27 other groups are participating.

Opinion: N.J. needs more high-voltage transmission infrastructure
Transmission planning is essential to the success of New Jersey's offshore wind and other renewable energy goals, writes Markian Melnyk, president of Atlantic Grid Development. "[A] well-planned high-voltage grid will be essential to minimizing the need for costly backup generation and storage to support variable renewable energy resources," Melnyk writes, noting that utilities should play a role in the process.

BOEM to launch comment period for Mass. offshore wind site Fri.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management will publish a notice of availability and launch a 45-day public comment period starting Friday on the draft environmental impact statement for Vineyard Wind's 800-megawatt offshore wind project slated for the coast of Massachusetts. "Our project has improved significantly over the past six months through substantive public comment and participation in the permitting process," Chief Development Officer Erich Stephens says.

Calif. city signs benefits deal with Castle Wind JV
City leaders in Morro Bay, Calif., have entered into a community benefits agreement with EnBW North America and Trident Wind's joint venture, Castle Wind JV, for the potential development of the 1-gigawatt Castle Wind offshore wind project off the coast. The developer has yet to secure a lease from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.

Utility Dive recognizes Xcel Energy for clean energy agenda

China Three Gorges bid for EDP Energias unit hits delays
China Three Gorges offered to acquire EDP Energias de Portugal and EDP Renovaveis' US renewable energy business in June in a $10.2 billion deal. EDP Energias CEO Antonio Mexia says the deal is still being vetted and a decision may come in 2019.
