States in the Midwest have a huge potential for renewable energy production, but more transmission lines are needed to support the industry's development, writes Lu Nelsen, a policy program associate with the Center for Rural Affairs. "We must continue to seek new and better ways to develop our transmission infrastructure as well as use insight from landowners and communities to find the best path forward for a renewable energy future," he writes.

These red states are leading US clean energy transition
Idaho, South Dakota, Montana, Alaska and Kansas -- five states considered Republican or red -- are national leaders in the US' transition to a clean energy economy, according to Energy Information Administration data. Kansas, in particular, sourced almost 30% of its total electricity from wind in 2016, compared to less than 1% in 2005.

Md. spending bill hindering offshore wind won't become law, says expert
It's highly unlikely that a spending measure seeking to block the use of federal funds for offshore wind turbines less than 24 nautical miles out from Maryland's coast will ever be signed into law, according to Business Network for Offshore Wind Executive Director Liz Burdock. She argues in a recent editorial that the rider is in the very early stages of a difficult legislative process and lacks Democratic support.

Lawmakers debut House version of 100% by 2050 clean energy bill
Rep. Jared Polis, D-Colo., and three other House lawmakers have introduced the 100 by '50 Act, a companion measure to a bill under consideration in the Senate that would require the US to source 100% of its electricity from clean energy sources by 2050. Renewables on the grid: Putting the negative-price myth to bed
New, comprehensive analysis of electricity market price data confirms that renewable energy policies are not directly factored into electricity market prices. The results confirm that any instances of renewable policies like the Production Tax Credit and state renewable standard credits being factored into market prices have a trivial impact on retiring power plants.
