The US sources almost eight times more of its electrical generation from wind and solar now than it did in 2007, and the average citizen uses 10% less energy overall than they did a decade ago, according to Environment America Research and Policy Center and the Frontier Group. "Every day, we see more evidence that an economy powered by renewable energy is within our reach," said Environment America Energy Program Director Rob Sargent.

AEP to invest $4.5B in 2,000-MW wind farm, transmission line
American Electric Power will invest $4.5 billion in a two-prong plan to bring more wind power to customers of two of its utilities, Public Service Co. of Oklahoma and Southwestern Electric Power. Pending regulatory approval, AEP said it plans to purchase Invenergy's 2,000-megawatt, 800-turbine Wind Catcher project in Oklahoma and then build a 350-mile transmission line that will carry the project's output throughout Oklahoma and into Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas.

N.Y. transmission line will increase access to wind, say officials
The 78-mile Moses-Adirondack Smart Path Reliability transmission line, once rebuilt, will improve grid reliability in New York, expand access to wind and solar generation and help the state meet its 50% by 2030 renewables goal, according to officials from the New York Power Authority. "Investing in new transmission to allow more renewable energy to flow where it's needed is both forward thinking and smart for New York," said Alliance for Clean Energy New York Executive Director Anne Reynolds.

Opinion: Mass. city should be US hub for offshore wind
New Bedford, Mass., should be the nation's hub for offshore wind development, writes Rick Kidder, president and CEO of the SouthCoast Chamber of Commerce. The pro-renewable energy policies of Massachusetts, the city's proximity to proposed East Coast offshore wind farms and its ability to build a strong supply chain for the industry make it well-suited for the task, he argues.

San Diego may encourage renewables with CCA system, says study
A Community Choice Aggregation system may help San Diego lower electricity costs, increase renewable energy usage and meet its greenhouse gas emissions goals, according to the study commissioned by the city. Eight other California cities are already employing CCAs, which allow local governments to decide where their utilities source their power from.

WindEurope: 6.1 GW of installed wind capacity added in first half of year
Europe added 6.1 gigawatts of installed wind capacity in the first half of the year, with 4.8 GW of the total coming from land-based wind farms, according to WindEurope. "We are on track for a good year in wind capacity installations but growth is driven by a handful of markets," Chief Policy Officer Pierre Tardieu said.
