Consumers in Iowa could save $12.6 billion over a 25-year period if the state were to double its installed wind capacity to 20,000 megawatts, according to the American Wind Energy Association. "Iowa is already a leader in wind energy, with only more growth visible on the horizon," said Iowa Economic Development Authority Director Debi Durham.

Renewables are mainstream and will continue to grow, says Invenergy exec
Renewable energy has become mainstream and will continue to account for a growing share of the nation's energy mix regardless of support mechanisms and other policies, said Invenergy Chief Financial Officer, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer James Murphy. However, support should be eliminated for all energy sources as the wind energy Production Tax Credit is phased out to ensure the playing field is fair, Murphy said.

Report: Global installed wind capacity could hit 2.1 TW by 2030
The world's installed wind capacity could hit 2.1 terawatts by 2030, providing 20% of the Earth's total electricity needs, according to the Global Wind Energy Council. Meeting that goal will require the "political will to put together the programs and policies," including following through on the Paris climate accord, the report said.

New report finds wind energy's benefits to Iowa go beyond lower electric bills
A new report from AWEA and the Wind Energy Foundation details how wind energy benefits Iowa electric consumers, both corporate and residential. Iowa generated 31.3% of its electricity from wind last year, while maintaining consumer costs below the national average. The report finds even larger consumer savings are possible. In addition, said Jay Byers, CEO of the Greater Des Moines Partnership, "Wind energy investments in Iowa have been a significant driver in attracting advanced manufacturing companies and data centers to our state," and they help recruit and retain top talent.
