A personal quest to promote the use of wind energy and hydrogen technology in the Great Lakes area of the United States. The Great Lakes area is in a unique position to become an energy exporting region through these and other renewable energy technologies. *Update 2014: Just do it everywhere - Dan*

The Heartbreaker - The Ruin Created By Oil And The Promise It Holds Back
From the dying Gulf of Mexico to the deaths enroute to Palestine, continued subservience to oil is a deadly abomination we can no longer afford.
The only real reason for the USA to even consider a continued alliance with the brutal nation of Israel is to maintain a military alliance in the Middle East and access to oil.
The only reason to risk deepwater drilling in any ocean whatsoever is for oil.
Trains, planes, plastics, and automobiles, as they currently exist, are killing people and entire ecosystems around the planet.
At the same time, money spent subsidizing this agent of global death, from military expenditures to 'foreign aid,' to direct subsidies, robs from the financial resources that could otherwise be creating the sustainable, healthy technologies that should have replaced petroleum by now.
Over a trillion dollars spent on on Iraq and Afghanistan. Several trillion dollars of extra military spending supporting hundreds of bases all over the planet. Who knows how much in payments to foreign governments and officials.
If oil really is derived from ancient dead plants and animals, the results of desecrating the graves of all that ancient death is more death now and in the future.
The vast majority of our problems globally are a result of our collective failure to advance beyond these primitive technologies.
We can still have cars. We can still have air travel. We can still have trains. Ships were successful before oil. They can be even more so if we incorporate flexible solar cells into sailcloth.
The updating of transportation technologies to move them to clean energy sources would create millions of sustainable jobs.
There has never been more in-your-face evidence of the need for transformation of this basic part of the global infrastructure.
By Fall, we will have millions of voters in coastal areas who will have great reason to align with this purpose.
The atmosphere and the oceans are screaming for change. We need to be ready to push as the rock is tipping.

At the 2010 Chicago Green Festival
I'm writing this note from the Chicago Green Festival at Navy Pier. I'm sitting at the main stage, Amy Goodman is up next, followed by Thom Hartmann.
There are at least a couple hundred vendor booths out there, thousands of people.
BP has already come up once. Chicago Mayor Daily opened the Fest, and Governor Quinn signed a new clean energy bill into law just after.
If only the rest of the world could feel this good, this hopeful, this kind...

Majority supports offshore wind power on Lake Ontario |
Superslick Is Super Sick
It is beyond belief what I am hearing on various sites about the profound lapses in safety procedures, inspections, and investment, the willful ignorance and cheap-skating of necessary engineering and safety practices.
This is the legacy of letting ultra-pro-big-business OILMEN run the country. Too bad the Democrats didn't clean house a whole lot further when they came in in 2008. They should have swept every Bush-appointed top official out on their hineys.
Yet here I am hearing that Gulf-State Republican Senators are begging to drill more. Say whaaaaat???
Are you kidding me!? Do these guys need to be spoon-fed oil-soaked shrimp, or what? Isn't it about time we went through the whole regulatory structure and straightened it out with COMPETENT people first? Shouldn't we be spending money on putting up offshore wind farms in the region instead?
Naw, let's just have another Republican Tar Party. They've already pretty much tarred the beaches and marshes of the entire Gulf Coast, with the Atlantic coast being the next target. These guys are nuts. Oil nuts. They are perfectly fine with killing the planet and everyone on it. That includes YOU, the person reading this and getting ready to spit venom at me for saying so. These guys, especially the Republicans, don't give a rat's ass about anybody that can't line their pockets.
Think about that this Summer while you Gulf-Coasters are boiling up your next pot of Gusher Gumbo. Like that rainbow sheen in your marguerita? Wait 'til the next hurricane pushes a real big wash of that oil slick right into your house and yard. McFly?! Anybody home??
Those Oil Slickers can afford to fly or boat to another country to enjoy the beaches. Can you?? Better get to the Red Lobster and order some shrimp - while you still can.

Is The St. Lawrence Seaway At Risk From The Gulf Oil Spill?
It would be wise to be ready in case that step becomes necessary, even if it never does. It's not worth risking the drinking water for untold millions of North Americans on both sides of the Canadian border, even for all the trade that comes through.
We need to be ready to move that commerce to the railways.
