Avangrid moves to expand US land-based, offshore wind footprint

Avangrid Renewables is expanding its US wind assets both in the water and on land through two new projects under early stages of development. Avangrid in partnership with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners submitted its Vineyard Wind project under Massachusetts' offshore wind RFP last week, and it is also readying to break ground on a 142-turbine project in New Mexico.

S.D. turbine manufacturing plant sidesteps closure
Molded Fiber Glass has received a "substantial new order" from NextEra Energy and General Electric, enabling it to continue operations at its manufacturing facility in Aberdeen, S.D., according to the company. "The decision by NextEra and GE to continue investing in the people of South Dakota and the wind industry is another positive story about the economic investment and opportunities that tax reform will provide," said Sen. John Thune, R-S.D.

Eolus orders Vestas turbines for 4 projects in Sweden
Eolus Vind has ordered 61 V136 3.45-megawatt turbines optimized to 3.8 MW from Vestas and 13 of the same optimized to 3.6 MW for four wind farms under development in Sweden, said the companies. "As the largest order to date between Eolus and Vestas, we are delighted to reaffirm our strong and long-standing relationship," said Vestas Head of Nordic Sales Christer Baden Hansen.

Transmission line between Scotland, Wales becomes energized
The 2.2-gigawatt Western Link connecting Scotland and Wales has reached first power and is expected to become fully operational next year, according to National Grid. The line will eventually carry up to 2.2 GW of Scottish renewables into England, reducing transmission bottlenecks and easing constraints on Scotland's wind farms.

Renewables, microgrids support US grid resiliency, says researcher
Microgrids integrated with renewables may help communities across the US combat grid resiliency issues associated with large, interconnected systems, said Erin Whitney, a researcher at the Alaska Center for Energy and Power. Whitney said microgrids help Alaskan communities ensure grid stability, cut electricity costs and become more independent.

Suzlon begins offshore wind study in Arabian Sea
Suzlon has launched a solar-powered lidar system that will compile wind data in the Arabian Sea over a two-year period, evaluating the area's potential for offshore wind development, said Suzlon. "Having pioneered the wind industry in India, it is indeed a proud moment for us to commission our first operational offshore met station," said Group CEO J.P. Chalasani.

Report: UK used more wind than coal for most of 2017
Wind farms in the UK generated more electricity than coal-burning power plants on 315 days in 2017, as of Dec. 12, according to energy research firm MyGridGB. "In 2018, the government should move to allow onshore wind, now the cheapest form of power for consumers, to be developed in parts of the UK where it is wanted," said RenewableUK Executive Director Emma Pinchbeck.

Gov. Cuomo introduces plan to advance N.Y. clean energy shift
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has released a new 2018 plan that calls on the New York State Common Retirement Fund to stop investing in fossil fuels and focus on clean energy sources, instead. The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority said the proposal signals to investors that the state is fully committed to a clean energy future.

Analysis: Tax bill may still harm Minn. wind industry
The final tax bill spares the wind energy Production Tax Credit phaseout, but it still creates uncertainty that may harm the wind industry in Minnesota and other states, writes Elizabeth Dunbar.
