New Cool for School

Small Changes Add Up
If 10,000 Chicago Biters inspire one sixth-grader to use a lunchbox instead of paper lunch bags throughout their school career, we’ll save the amount of paper it would take to cover Midway Airport four times.

Cocktail Tidbit
In addition to sChool Globes rising stars, Cool Globes artists include celebs Adam Sandler, Magic Johnson, and Robert Redford, who each painted a mini-globe for the initiative.

If you see grade-A instructor Josie Elbert walking down the street, give her an eco-high five. Teacher in Residence at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, Josie is greening up Chicago Public Schools with sChool Globes, a joint Cool Globes/Notebaert classroom curriculum she developed to get kids hip to climate change. As part of a five-week program that just wrapped up, 500 sixth-grade students studied issues such as fuel efficiency and the greenhouse effect through science and art projects, including the creation of mini-globes (we’re way past papier-mâché volcanos here). This fall, DC and SF schools follow suit. Josie also works to chill the planet at home by potting native plants in compost soil side by side with her newborn son…who’s bound to be cool.

We hear this High Fiver hangs out at the Green City Market, south end of Lincoln Park b/t 1750 N. Clark and Stockton Dr. (773-435-0280).
