AWEA's Gramlich: Wind an economic success story for Iowa | Analysis: Utilities face choice as corporate PPAs soar | Gulf Power wins right to add 94 MW of installed wind capacity to grid
Wind has become a key player in Iowa's economic success and continues to be an important part of its energy mix, writes American Wind Energy Association Senior Vice President of Government and Public Affairs Rob Gramlich. "Federal policy has been an important driver of this success. It has spurred American innovation and improved domestic manufacturing, which have helped cut the price consumers pay for wind energy by two-thirds over six years," he writes.
The growing number of corporations demanding generation from renewables has left many utilities in the US with a difficult decision, to add clean energy to their already inundated grids or lose customers to third-party power purchase agreements, according to this analysis. Observers say that green tariffs, a method in which utilities acquire output from renewables and then sell it to customers that specifically want green energy, could be one solution to the problem.

The Florida Public Service Commission has granted Gulf Power approval to add output from the 94-megawatt Kingfisher wind farm in Oklahoma to its grid. "This is a major step forward in our mission to deliver reliable, affordable and clean energy with renewable energy that makes economic sense for our customers," said Gulf Power spokesman Rick DelaHaya.
Taiwan Power, a state-owned utility, has established a business that will focus on offshore wind development. The company said it is planning a 110-megawatt offshore wind project off the coast of Changhua and that it hopes to eventually add 1 gigawatt of installed offshore wind capacity.
General Electric has extended a pair of existing supply deals with TPI Composites through 2020, according to the duo. GE said it has also signed a new supply deal with the firm, which will provide a third-party factory in Mexico with blades.
Offshore wind specialist Head Energy Denmark has won a contract to provide Siemens Wind Power with marine project management, lifting, and management and engineering services for its offshore wind assets in Europe.
The 142-megawatt Pampa wind farm, which Nordex is in the process of commissioning, has brought Uruguay's total installed wind capacity to more than 1 gigawatt, according to the company. It added that Uruguay is on track to have a total installed wind capacity of 1.3 GW by the end of the year.
Voters who want to tackle climate change should support Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, said former Vice President Al Gore on Tuesday. "The world is on the cusp of either building on the progress and solving the climate crisis or stepping back and washing our hands of America's traditional role as a leader of the world and letting big polluters call the shots," he said.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump may have changed his stance on renewables during Sunday's debate when he expressed support for wind and solar energy during the second-to-last question of the night, writes David Foxwell. He argues that a shift like that would signal to trade groups that renewables will continue to become a growing force in the US.
