Both political parties have made conspicuous efforts to make their marquee events more sustainable this year. Democratic organizers in Boston are implementing a variety of environmental initiatives, from carbon-offset programs and sustainable food service to biodegradable balloons and recycled-content confetti.

In New York, Republican convention planners have devised a more efficient mass-transit system designed to shuttle participants to and from the event while minimizing emissions.
