What Can You Do With a Master's in Environmental Law?

Many of our prospective students ask, "What can you do with an environmental law master's degree?" Vermont Law School's Online Master of Environmental Law and Policy is a broad degree that prepares you for a number of careers. It depends on your education, experience, and most importantly, your passion.

Career Spotlight:

Consultant
There are a large number of environmental consultancies around the globe involved in a broad range of activities. Consultants can be in the private, public, NGO, or nonprofit sectors. Many previous government roles are becoming privatized (e.g. NEPA analysis is now primarily completed by private consultancies). Just a few of the activities can include: regulatory compliance, energy and efficiency planning, sustainability management, risk analysis, and research and evaluation. Watch a brief video here.

Technician/Scientist
Many professionals with previous technical or scientific experience want to understand the policy in which they're working. Careers in these fields can focus on: environmental engineering, biology, corporate sustainability, energy and efficiency planning, research and risk analysis, construction, operations, and maintenance. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts better-than-average job growth in these careers through 2020. Watch a brief video here.

"After studying environmental law and policy at VLS, I'm at the center of a triangle that includes business, science, and law, and energy is at the core. This is a unique place to be, and I'm doing some meaningful work in energy policy because of it. I love where I am in my career."

– Keith Dennis, Class of '05, Lead Energy Project, US Dept. of Energy
