These carbon standards represent an historic opportunity to limit the largest source of global warming emissions. These standards will protect our health and our environment by hastening the transition away from coal-fired power to cleaner, increasingly cost-competitive energy sources like wind and solar. UCS analysis shows that there are opportunities to achieve even deeper emission reductions and ensure that the standards are a true climate game changer. Check out our infographic to learn more! 
Climate change is a result of too much carbon. Scientists know that certain gases trap heat and act like a blanket to warm the planet. One of the most important of these gases is carbon dioxide. When we burn gasoline to drive our cars or burn coal, oil, or gas to heat our homes and power our lives, we release carbon dioxide, which is now overloading our atmosphere. These standards are an essential step toward slowing the pace and magnitude of climate change. UCS analysis shows that strong global warming standards coupled with renewable energy and energy efficiency policies could cut power sector emissions 50 percent below current levels by 2030, with renewable energy and energy efficiency playing a significant role in delivering cost-effective reductions. The proposed standards for existing power plants are the most significant step that our government has taken to address climate change. The fossil fuel industry and its allies are already gearing up to fight these historic standards and are spreading misinformation about their potential cost and impact. It's critical that we push back and set the record straight that these standards represent a long-overdue opportunity to curb our global warming emissions and support economic growth through a transition to a clean energy economy.
